Improvement
We evaluate our environmental performance and continually seek ways to reduce emissions from our coal plants as we strive to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions.

Focus on Renewables
48% of our owned and contracted generating capacity comes from renewable and noncarbon sources. As of December 31, 2020, Berkshire Hathaway Energy had invested $34 billion in wind, solar, geothermal and biomass generation.
We continue to pursue and invest in renewable energy opportunities for the benefit of our customers. As of December 31, 2020, only 6% of our overall net investment in property, plant and equipment was invested in coal generation assets.

Clean Hydrogen and Ammonia Supply Chain Project
Hydrogen, when used as a fuel, produces no carbon emissions, and the expectation to utilize Hydrogen as fuel is rising to achieve a carbon-neutral society. In addition to its usage as fuel, it can also be utilized as a raw material to decarbonize multiple industrial processes. Clean ammonia, produced from clean hydrogen, is highly distributable and the Japanese government is working to stimulate annual domestic demand for both clean hydrogen / ammonia of 3 million tons by 2030 respectively, and 20 million tons of clean hydrogen / 30 million tons of clean ammonia by 2050 respectively. The United States, Europe, and Asian countries are also actively promoting to introduce clean hydrogen related products. To meet such demand, we are leveraging our accumulated experience in creating energy supply chains as well as our knowledge in clean hydrogen and ammonia to develop our business globally.

Focus on Renewables
MC's participation in the Brunei LNG Project came about through a decision to partner with Shell for LNG production and its export to Japan. Shell had discovered promising offshore gas fields of Brunei in 1963. In 1969, the partnership between the two companies led to the establishment of Brunei LNG Sdn. Bhd. (Brunei LNG) together with full support and investment from Brunei government. The newly established company set about building an LNG infrastructure with facilities ranging from a natural gas liquefaction plant and jetty for LNG shipment. The joint venture's first LNG shipment from Brunei to Japan arrived in 1972 and a stable supply has been provided ever since. This LNG plant has the longest history among the LNG plants currently operating around the world. LNG produced in Brunei has contributed to the development of Japanese industry and improvement of daily life in Japan for more than 50 years. Furthermore, in 2000 and after, we have acquired ownership of companies owning LNG carriers and also participated in a deepwater upstream oil & gas block. Over the past 50 years, we have built a value chain that covers throughout upstream, liquefaction, sales and transportation.
The partners of Donggi-Senoro LNG project consist of MC, Korea Gas Corporation, the Indonesian state-owned oil & gas company; Pertamina, and the Indonesia's largest publicly-listed energy company; Medco. The project has been contributing to society with production and sales of LNG. This is the first LNG project entirely owned and operated by Asian companies without the investment of international oil majors, and also the first project in which MC participates as operator and hold the largest shares (44.9%). LNG production commenced in August 2015, and the plant has been stably producing LNG since its start-up.
The project company, PT Donggi-Senoro LNG, liquefies natural gas supplied from Senoro-Toili block and Matindok block in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. The company produces around 2 million tons of LNG annually, and the LNG is delivered to each buyer based on long-term agreements: JERA (1.0 million tons), Korea Gas Corporation (0.7 million tons) and Kyushu Electric Power (0.3 million tons).

Our Project
Cameron LNG project
Cameron LNG project is an LNG exporting project in which MC participates via Japan LNG Investment, LLC (JLI), a joint venture with Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, along with US-based Sempra, TotalEnergies of France, and Mitsui & Co.
This is the first LNG export project on the US mainland in which we have invested in. Commercial operation began in August 2019, and LNG output is 12.0 million tons per annum using a total of three liquefaction trains (4 million tons per each train).
MC, which owns the rights to use the capacity equivalent to one liquefaction train, is procuring and delivering natural gas via pipelines to Cameron LNG terminal to liquefy it. We are selling approximately 4 million tons per annum of LNG produced to customers in Japan and other countries.
Through this project, we aim to diversify our procurement sources of LNG and achieve long-term stable supply of LNG.

Montney shale gas development project/LNG Canada project
MC is building a natural gas value chain in Canada, from upstream resource development to LNG production, export and sales. In terms of upstream resource development businesses, we are working with Ovintiv Inc. on developing and producing shale gas from Montney Formation in the area near Dawson Creek, British Columbia. Also, to export and sell the natural gas as LNG, we made a final investment decision on the LNG Canada project, together with our partners, in October 2018. This project involves the construction of liquefaction facilities in Kitimat, British Columbia, with annual production capacity of 14 million tons (two trains of 7 million tons each), and LNG will be exported and sold to customers in Japan and other East Asian countries.

Our Facilities
Berkshire Hathaway Energy has an interest in more than one dozen facilities across the U.S. that harness or produce geothermal power.

Geothermal Efficiency
Geothermal energy is so efficient, the only real source of energy loss comes from turbine friction.

COAL-FUELED VIRTUAL PLANT TOUR
Advanced supercritical technology allows boiler and turbine equipment to operate at extremely high temperatures and pressures, requiring less coal and resulting in fewer emissions.

Energy Unearthed
Geothermal power generation uses the natural heat of the earth to make electricity for homes and businesses. Berkshire Hathaway Energy has several companies that use or produce geothermal energy. For example, in California’s Imperial Valley, BHE Renewables, operating as CalEnergy, owns 10 facilities that produce electricity solely from naturally occurring steam. They do this with geothermal production wells that tap into superheated water reservoirs thousands of feet beneath the earth’s surface to release tremendous pressure, which rushes to the surface. Once above ground, the steam is separated and used to drive turbines that generate electricity.

The Evolution of Coal
Coal’s importance in a balanced energy portfolio cannot be denied — it plays a large role in helping Berkshire Hathaway Energy deliver the low-cost, reliable energy our customers depend on. And through environmental compliance, efficiency upgrades to existing plants and expanding investments in noncarbon generation sources, our proactive business model helps us ensure we can continue to provide the energy our customers rely on while reducing the overall intensity of our emissions.

Energy efficiency and management
Energy efficiency is a key component in our strategy to increase the sustainability of our operations. Championing and practicing energy efficiency helps us to reduce emissions, improve the operational performance of our plants and facilities, and promote environmentally responsible communities. Nature is an unique creation of almighty. It is the government as well as our concern to safeguard our natural environment from the harmful impact of radiation waste products.Thepractice of protecting the atmosphere from the harmful influence is typically known as environmental protection. Thus, the effective and efficient management of energy sources is extremely beneficial for the living beings and environment.
Our energy efficiency efforts seek to reduce energy consumption at industrial and commercial facilities. We aim to
• Design new facilities to be energy efficient
• Increase overall energy efficiency
• Influence and promote energy efficiency at the national level
Renewable and distributed energy sources demand management, load flexibility, and energy storage. Apex offers companies for opportunities and unprecedented choice in how to meet their energy needs.
