Clean Hydrogen and Ammonia Supply Chain Project
As one approach to achieving a carbon-neutral society, MC is aiming for social implementation of using clean hydrogen and ammonia mainly as a fuel. Together with our partners, we are developing large-scale and stable clean hydrogen and ammonia supply chains. We will contribute to sustainable growth by achieving both stable supply of energy and decarbonization.

Brunei LNG project
MC's participation in the Brunei LNG Project came about through a decision to partner with Shell for LNG production and its export to Japan. Shell had discovered promising offshore gas fields of Brunei in 1963. In 1969, the partnership between the two companies led to the establishment of Brunei LNG Sdn. Bhd. (Brunei LNG) together with full support and investment from Brunei government. The newly established company set about building an LNG infrastructure with facilities ranging from a natural gas liquefaction plant and jetty for LNG shipment. The joint venture's first LNG shipment from Brunei to Japan arrived in 1972 and a stable supply has been provided ever since. This LNG plant has the longest history among the LNG plants currently operating around the world. LNG produced in Brunei has contributed to the development of Japanese industry and improvement of daily life in Japan for more than 50 years. Furthermore, in 2000 and after, we have acquired ownership of companies owning LNG carriers and also participated in a deepwater upstream oil & gas block. Over the past 50 years, we have built a value chain that covers throughout upstream, liquefaction, sales and transportation.
The partners of Donggi-Senoro LNG project consist of MC, Korea Gas Corporation, the Indonesian state-owned oil & gas company; Pertamina, and the Indonesia's largest publicly-listed energy company; Medco. The project has been contributing to society with production and sales of LNG. This is the first LNG project entirely owned and operated by Asian companies without the investment of international oil majors, and also the first project in which MC participates as operator and hold the largest shares (44.9%). LNG production commenced in August 2015, and the plant has been stably producing LNG since its start-up.
The project company, PT Donggi-Senoro LNG, liquefies natural gas supplied from Senoro-Toili block and Matindok block in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. The company produces around 2 million tons of LNG annually, and the LNG is delivered to each buyer based on long-term agreements: JERA (1.0 million tons), Korea Gas Corporation (0.7 million tons) and Kyushu Electric Power (0.3 million tons).

Cameron LNG project is an LNG exporting project in which MC participates via Japan LNG Investment, LLC (JLI), a joint venture with Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, along with US-based Sempra, TotalEnergies of France, and Mitsui & Co.
This is the first LNG export project on the US mainland in which we have invested in. Commercial operation began in August 2019, and LNG output is 12.0 million tons per annum using a total of three liquefaction trains (4 million tons per each train).
MC, which owns the rights to use the capacity equivalent to one liquefaction train, is procuring and delivering natural gas via pipelines to Cameron LNG terminal to liquefy it. We are selling approximately 4 million tons per annum of LNG produced to customers in Japan and other countries.
Through this project, we aim to diversify our procurement sources of LNG and achieve long-term stable supply of LNG.

Metal One is a joint venture company with Sojitz Corporation, engaged in distribution, inventory, processing/manufacturing of steel products.
The company contributes to resolving industrial issues by working to further enhance and strengthen the steel product value chain, utilizing our knowledge of mobility, construction, infrastructure and others industries, global network and digital technology.

While iron is an essential material for the development of society, large amounts of carbon dioxide are also emitted during its manufacturing process. With the need for low carbon/decarbonization of the steel product supply chain, POSCO MC MATERIALS Co., Ltd. manufactures and sells the main material for graphite electrodes (needle coke), which is essential for the operation of electric furnaces (steel product recycling), whose use is expected to grow in the future. Together with joint venture partners, POSCO FUTURE M (a subsidiary of POSCO, South Korea's largest steelmaker) and Mitsubishi Chemical, it aims to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society through this business.

SHARQ
SHARQ has been producing the petrochemical products of polyethylene and ethylene glycol since 1985. Using Saudi Arabia's natural gas reserves as a raw material, this facility has achieved and sustained stable operations. Having been through three rounds of capacity increases, its production capacity ranks among the highest globally.

BMA
Trend Haven, which develops, produces, and sells various resources in Australia as a platform for MC’s metal resources business, engages in the world’s largest BMA steelmaking coal business with its partner, BHP Group plc. BMA manages five operating mines that produce high-quality, cost-competitive steelmaking coal, and also handles the integrated management of a rail network and port terminal.
The business model is currently undergoing transition from that of the conventional shipping business to a next-generation maritime business. This involves transforming from existing ship assets to low or zero-emission specification ships, addressing industry challenges with maritime digital transformation (DX), and engaging in initiatives toward the realization of next-generation energy transport carriers business in carrying cargo such as ammonia, hydrogen, and liquefied CO2.

The Evolution of Coal
Coal’s importance in a balanced energy portfolio cannot be denied — it plays a large role in helping Berkshire Hathaway Energy deliver the low-cost, reliable energy our customers depend on. And through environmental compliance, efficiency upgrades to existing plants and expanding investments in noncarbon generation sources, our proactive business model helps us ensure we can continue to provide the energy our customers rely on while reducing the overall intensity of our emissions.

Energy
Berkshire Hathaway Energy has an interest in more than one dozen facilities across the U.S. that harness or produce geothermal power.
Geothermal energy is so efficient, the only real source of energy loss comes from turbine friction.

Coal-Fueled Virtual Plant Tour
Advanced supercritical technology allows boiler and turbine equipment to operate at extremely high temperatures and pressures, requiring less coal and resulting in fewer emissions.

Energy
We evaluate our environmental performance and continually seek ways to reduce emissions from our coal plants as we strive to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions.
Improvement
Focus on Renewables
48% of our owned and contracted generating capacity comes from renewable and noncarbon sources. As of December 31, 2020, Berkshire Hathaway Energy had invested $34 billion in wind, solar, geothermal and biomass generation.
Investment
We continue to pursue and invest in renewable energy opportunities for the benefit of our customers. As of December 31, 2020, only 6% of our overall net investment in property, plant and equipment was invested in coal generation assets.
Energy Unearthed
Geothermal power generation uses the natural heat of the earth to make electricity for homes and businesses. Berkshire Hathaway Energy has several companies that use or produce geothermal energy. For example, in California’s Imperial Valley, BHE Renewables, operating as CalEnergy, owns 10 facilities that produce electricity solely from naturally occurring steam. They do this with geothermal production wells that tap into superheated water reservoirs thousands of feet beneath the earth’s surface to release tremendous pressure, which rushes to the surface. Once above ground, the steam is separated and used to drive turbines that generate electricity.

Energy
A Network of Reliable Power
Natural gas is transported through a series of massive underground pipes that operate much like an interstate system, providing cost-effective power that allows us to cook our food, dry our clothes and heat our homes. One of the cleanest burning fuels available, it’s an important part of both our daily lives and our economy.
Using the most sophisticated computer networks in the gas transportation industry, BHE Pipeline Group – comprised of our subsidiaries Kern River Gas Transmission Company, Northern Natural Gas and BHE GT&S – work to reliably deliver that power precisely when and where it’s needed. In 2020, BHE Pipeline Group transported approximately 15% of the natural gas consumed in the U.S.

Energy
Customer Satisfaction
Northern Natural Gas Company owns the largest interstate natural gas pipeline system in the U.S., extending from southern Texas to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Our gas pipeline companies ranked first and second among 39 interstate natural gas pipelines in the 2021 Mastio & Company customer satisfaction survey and were first among major organizational groups for the 16th consecutive year.
